Responsibilities Reviews data and makes recommendations on wildlife issues within the Field Office area. Serves on field level interdisciplinary teams, and is responsible for writing and reviewing required biological input into environmental assessments and other NEPA documents, as well as biological assessments. Responsible for the identification of impacts to wildlife habitat by other resource activities. Evaluates inventory and monitoring data to determine habitat impacts, and formulates strategies to minimize or mitigate impacts. Designs and implements habitat improvement and restoration projects in coordination with other programs, federal agencies and non-government organizations. For GS-07: In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirements listed in the Education section of this announcement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-5 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Assisting with the collection of field data on wildlife habitats and vegetation. Interpreting aerial photos to determine vegetation types. Assembling biological and vegetation use data from records to determine past wildlife and livestock use. Assisting with the classification and evaluation of vegetations and soil to determine suitable habitats and ranges for wildlife. -OR- One full year of graduate level education -OR- A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience -OR- Superior Academic Achievement (to determine if you are eligible, go here) For GS-09: In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirements listed in the Education section of this announcement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Serving as an advanced trainee specializing in wildlife biology and performing common qualitative and quantitative analyses of wildlife resources. Conducting surveys and drafting tentative professional opinions to assist in determining wildlife resource needs and remedies. Assisting in carrying out a range of analytical/scientific assignments in the wildlife biology profession that included researching and analyzing data, issues, and information that support wildlife project recommendations. -OR- A master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. -OR- A combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level) For GS-11: In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirements listed in the Education section of this announcement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Providing input in the wildlife management program by gathering, compiling, and analyzing data to determine environmental conditions, characteristics, and values, and the interrelationship of wildlife resources with other resources. Analyzing data and recommending solutions to problems involving a limited section of wildlife resources issues, e.g., interpreting the effect and impact of changes on wildlife habitat as a result of specific resource activities. Providing input in the preparation, maintenance, and revision of wildlife plans that involved interpretation of data obtained from studies and field surveys. -OR- Successfully completed three (3) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or have received a Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree in biological science or directly related coursework. -OR- A combination of graduate level education (beyond 18 semester hours) and specialized experience that is directly related to this position that together meets the qualification requirements for this position. Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: Work requires long periods of standing, walking or riding horses over rough terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, or similar activities. Work may also include frequent lifting of moderately heavy items, such as equipment and samples that weigh less than 23 kilograms or approximately 50 pounds. The physical demands of this position meet the description of the physical demands described by the standard at the 8-2 level. Some the work of the position is performed in an office however, there is also considerable field work involved in the performance of this work. In order to gather samples and complete monitoring activities, the individual may be frequently required to walk or ride vehicles over rough terrain, perform duties that require recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching or lifting. Work may also include lifting of moderately heavy items, such equipment and samples. The incumbent may be subjected to hostile wildlife, chemical and physical hazards. Work Environment: Work involves exposure to moderate risks and discomforts, such as those due to: adverse weather conditions, such as high winds and low or high temperatures, falling trees; and hostile wildlife; The work environment of this position indicates that the position environment is comparable to the description of the standard at 9-2 level. The work of this position is sometimes performed in an office setting with adequate lighting and temperatures. However, when necessary to complete the work, there is outdoor exposure. Outdoor exposure requires some discomfort in extremes of temperature or inclement weather. The incumbent may be subjected to hostile wildlife, chemical and physical hazards. Education This position has an individual occupational requirement. In order to qualify, you must meet one of the below: 1.) Degree: biological science that included: At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences. -OR- 2.) Combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
